Abstract: This article focuses on the issue of pitting corrosion of ASTM A182 F53 flanges in specific environments and employs the G48 A method for pitting corrosion testing. The results are analyzed to provide references for material selection, design, and usage of flanges.
Introduction:
ASTM A182 F53 flanges are widely used in industries such as petroleum, chemical, and pharmaceutical due to their corrosion-resistant stainless steel properties. In practical applications, flanges are prone to pitting corrosion in specific environments, which can affect the safe operation of equipment. To evaluate the pitting corrosion resistance of F53 flanges, this paper conducts pitting corrosion tests using the G48 A method and analyzes the results.
Materials and Methods:
Test Materials
The test material used is ASTM A182 F53 flange material, with the following main chemical composition: C≤0.03%, Si≤1.00%, Mn≤2.00%, P≤0.040%, S≤0.030%, Cr=18.00-23.00%, Ni=6.00-8.00%, Mo=3.00-4.50%, N=0.10-0.16%.
Test Method
According to ASTM G48 A method, the pitting corrosion test procedure is as follows:
(1) Sample Preparation: Process the F53 flange material into 20mm×10mm×3mm samples, totaling 5.
(2) Sample Cleaning: Clean the sample surfaces with alcohol and acetone to remove oil and impurities.
(3) Test Solution: Prepare a 6% FeCl3 solution with a pH of 1.
(4) Test Process: Immerse the samples in the test solution at a temperature of 50°C for a duration of 24 hours.
(5) Sample Retrieval: After the test, remove the samples, rinse with deionized water, and dry.
(6) Removal of Corrosion Products: Use a 10% HNO3 solution to remove the corrosion products from the sample surfaces.
(7) Measurement of Pitting Corrosion Depth: Observe the sample surfaces with a microscope and measure the pitting corrosion depth.
Results and Analysis:
Test Results
After 24 hours of testing, the pitting corrosion depths for the 5 samples are as follows: 1# sample: 0.023mm; 2# sample: 0.018mm; 3# sample: 0.025mm; 4# sample: 0.022mm; 5# sample: 0.021mm.
Analysis of Results
(1) Pitting Corrosion Depth: Based on the test results, the pitting corrosion depth of the F53 flange material ranges from 0.018mm to 0.025mm, indicating a certain level of resistance to pitting corrosion in the 6% FeCl3 solution.
(2) Pitting Corrosion Morphology: Observing the sample surfaces, the pitting corrosion mainly appears as round or oval shapes with shallow pits and a uniform distribution.
(3) Pitting Corrosion Resistance: Compared to other stainless steel materials, the F53 flange exhibits better resistance to pitting corrosion in the 6% FeCl3 solution, making it suitable for conditions with a certain corrosion risk.
Conclusion:
Through the pitting corrosion test of ASTM A182 F53 flanges using the G48 A method, the following conclusions are drawn:
The F53 flange has a certain level of resistance to pitting corrosion in the 6% FeCl3 solution.
The pitting corrosion depth ranges from 0.018mm to 0.025mm, with the corrosion morphology primarily round or oval.
The F53 flange is suitable for conditions with a certain corrosion risk, providing references for material selection, design, and usage.
